Easy Best Out of Waste Ideas for Kids

Education News

Many parents today wonder how to reduce their children’s screen time, given the growing number of pre-teen mobile users. One way is to get them to make things themselves from recyclable or waste products.

However, as there are multiple options or ideas available, selecting the best out of waste ideas can prove to be difficult. To help you out, this blog details some popular, easy-to-make things you can make at home.

Best Out of Waste Ideas Your Kids Can Apply

DIY Planters

DIY planters are a great way to introduce some greenery to your home and also possibly enhance the indoor air quality. To make this, you will need 2-4 plastic bottles, scissors, strong wire or rope, plant saplings and soil, and 1-2 nails.  You may also use acrylic paints for decorating.

After gathering all the items, you may instruct your child to do the following under your supervision:

  • First, wash the bottles thoroughly, dry them and cut a rectangular opening on each side of each bottle with the scissors.
  • Make some holes with the scissors or nails at the top and bottom ends of the bottle. They can paint the bottles with designs or their favorite cartoon characters, if they like, and let the paint dry off.
  • Use the ropes to create a hanging attachment by threading them through the top and bottom bottle holes. Once ready, fill it with soil, plant saplings and hang them on your children’s room walls or balcony.

Snowman from A Sock

This out-of-waste idea will be a hit with your toddlers or younger children. You will need two old white socks, rubber bands, shirt buttons, small grains, cloth strips, scissors, and colored paper bits to make this.

After acquiring everything, you may tell your child to do the following:

  • Cut 1 of the old socks in half and fill it with the rice or grains.
  • Stick it with glue to a cardboard box strip or make it stand, and then tie a rubber band to form the lower body of the snowman.
  • After that, tie another rubber band slightly above the previous one to form the snowman’s head.
  • Once the snowman’s body is formed, they can glue the buttons on the body and face to form the eyes and dress buttons.
  • Use a color paper bit to make it conical and attach it as the nose.
  • Drape one cloth strip around the neck to form his scarf.

Milkbox Balcony Bird Feeders

Making a bird feeder could be a great idea, as it could help your little ones to care for nature as well. To make this item, you would need an old milk carton, paint and a paintbrush, string, scissors and birdseed.

Your children could then:

  • Cut a vertical, rectangular or square-sized portion on both sides of the milk carton.
  • Paint it as per their choice.
  • Use a small container or fill the base of the carton with the bird seeds.

When making the gap, ensure that there is some distance between the base and the gap to prevent the birdseed from spilling over.

Toy Garage Made From Empty Kitchen Foil

You probably have many leftover lunch foil rolls at home. In that case, you would need a box, some toy cars, and some crayons to make a lunch foil roll garage. Your children can then:

  • Make the box stand on a base and glue it if required
  • Glue empty foil rolls upright inside the box, placing them side by side to form parking slots
  • Color both sides of the boxes with their crayons
  • Once done, children can park their toy cars inside each roll like a mini garage

Conclusion

Making products from recycled materials can teach your child the importance of sustainable practices.  Moreover, you could use these craftmaking sessions as bonding sessions with your children as well.

Furthermore, you could also tell your children to encourage their friends to share their best out of waste ideas as well. Doing so would ensure that everyone could act on those ideas and have a great time.
